The BareNaked Portfolios Guide

The playbook behind the portfolio: what we track, how we rank, and how we manage risk.

What BareNaked Portfolios is

BareNaked Portfolios runs a real-money portfolio in the open. We show what we own, what is changing, and where the risk sits, in plain language, built on evidence rather than predictions. When something changes, you see it.

What to check, and when

You do not need to watch this all day. The rhythm is:

  • When you get a notification. A trade has happened, a stop has moved, the Leaders board has been updated, or a new report is live. This is the only part that asks anything of you, and you choose which of them reach you.
  • When a new Market Report lands. The one write-up that puts the period together: the market, the portfolio, the Leaders board, and where the risk sits.
  • Whenever you want the detail. Positions, stops, every transaction and the full performance record are always there, and they are always current.

Everything below explains those pieces in turn.

The portfolio you can follow

At the center of everything is our portfolio: a real account, with real money, showing actual positioning rather than a theoretical model.

Every buy and sell syncs straight from the brokerage into a timestamped log that is never rewritten. What you see is what happened, in the order it happened.

The portfolio is growth-oriented and may be concentrated in a small number of high-momentum stocks or ETFs. At times it may also hold a meaningful amount of cash. The goal is not to own everything. It is to own the names that are acting best, and to manage risk when a position’s character changes.

BareNaked Leaders

BareNaked Leaders is our leadership board. It ranks stocks and ETFs by technical strength, momentum (how strongly and consistently a price is trending), and leadership, so you can see where strength is building across the market.

A name appearing on the Leaders list is not automatically a buy, and a name leaving it is not automatically a sell. The portfolio’s buys are drawn from Leaders, but not every holding is on the board: leadership rotates, and a position can stay in the portfolio after its name drops off. The list is a research tool. Actual portfolio decisions also depend on timing, risk, the shape of the chart, position size, and the broader market.

The BNP Score. Each name carries a BNP Score: a proprietary reading from 0 to 100 that summarizes its technical and momentum characteristics. A high score means a name is showing strong technicals. It is one input in our process, not a stand-alone trading system, and it is never a personalized recommendation.

Reports

The Market Report is our main write-up, and the main thing you get as a subscriber. Each one covers the same ground: the market, the portfolio, the Leaders board, and where the risk sits. Reports are published weekly, with an extra one when the market gives us something worth saying, and a notification tells you when one is live. Past reports stay available in the archive, so you can follow how the thinking developed.

Notifications

Between reports, shorter notifications tell you when something has actually happened. There are four kinds, each named after the section it comes from:

  • Portfolio: a position is bought, sold, added to, or trimmed.
  • Stops: a stop price or its note is updated.
  • Leaders: the Leaders board is updated.
  • Reports: a new Market Report is live.

Stop notifications cover a level being set, moved or removed, or its note being changed. They do not cover the daily review: stops are looked over every session, and a level confirmed unchanged is not news. You hear when something actually moves.

Each kind can reach you in the app, by email, both, or neither. You choose that in your account settings, and can change it whenever you like.

Favorites

Favorites is your own list of names to keep an eye on: stocks, ETFs or indices. Star one straight from the Leaders board or from its symbol page, or search for it on the Favorites page, which the star in the top bar opens. It is yours alone: it does not change the portfolio, it does not tell us what to buy, and nobody else sees it. You can keep up to 50.

The page itself lists everything you have starred with its price and day change, and marks the ones the portfolio holds or that are currently on the Leaders board.

Starring a name also does two things elsewhere. Lists that can be filtered (Leaders, Reports and closed positions) gain a Favorites toggle, so you can look at only those names. And any starred symbol’s own page gains a Next favorite control, so you can step through the list without going back to it.

Performance

Performance is shown in full, measured against the major market indices. You can see the return over any period we track, how the portfolio has moved over time, every closed position and its actual realized result, and which positions did the most to help or hurt.

Nothing is hidden or quietly dropped. Closed positions stay on the record whether they worked or not.

How we manage risk

Risk management is central to how BareNaked Portfolios works. Momentum names can move quickly in both directions, so we watch position size, price action, support levels, moving averages, volatility, and stop levels.

A stop is a reference price that helps define where a position’s character may be changing. It is not an automatic sell order. A position may be reviewed, reduced, or sold based on price action, closing levels, market conditions, overall exposure, or a change in leadership.

Cash is part of the plan. Holding cash is not a failure to act. When leadership is unclear, volatility is high, or the risk and reward simply are not attractive, cash gives the portfolio flexibility and keeps us from forcing trades. In BareNaked Portfolios terms, cash is dry powder: it protects capital and lets us act when better setups appear.
