Frequently asked questions

What BareNaked Portfolios is, how the record is kept, and what a subscription costs.

Updated

The portfolio

What is BareNaked Portfolios, and how does the service work?

BareNaked Portfolios is a subscription that publishes a real-money brokerage account in the open. Subscribers see every position, every trade and the portfolio’s stops, synced from the broker rather than typed in by hand.

Is BareNaked Portfolios real money or a model portfolio?

BareNaked Portfolios trades real money. The account holds our own capital at a live brokerage, with no outside investors and no hypothetical model. Every buy and sell is the account’s actual trade, imported from the broker.

How are BareNaked Portfolios returns measured against the stock market?

BareNaked Portfolios measures the account’s current value against its starting capital and compares that return with the S&P 500 over the same period. The account’s largest drop from a high is published alongside the return, so the risk taken is visible too.

Does BareNaked Portfolios publish its losing trades as well as winners?

Yes. Every BareNaked Portfolios trade is in the transaction history, whether it closed at a realized gain or loss. The trade log comes from the broker and is never edited by hand, so a losing trade is not quietly removed after the fact.

How often does BareNaked Portfolios buy and sell stocks?

BareNaked Portfolios trades on no fixed schedule. The portfolio is growth-oriented and acts when a position’s momentum or risk changes. Holding cash while market leadership is unclear is part of the plan, so quiet stretches are deliberate rather than a pause.

Is a BareNaked Portfolios stop an automatic sell order?

No. A BareNaked Portfolios stop is a reference price marking where a position’s character may be changing, not an order at the broker. The position may then be reviewed, reduced or sold based on price action, market conditions and overall exposure.

What is the BNP Score on the BareNaked Portfolios Leaders board?

The BNP Score is a proprietary reading from 0 to 100 of a stock’s technical strength and momentum. A higher score means stronger technicals. It is one input in the BareNaked Portfolios process, not a buy signal or a trading system.

Advice, risk and taxes

Is BareNaked Portfolios personalized investment advice from a registered adviser?

No. BareNaked Portfolios is a financial publisher, not a registered investment adviser, broker-dealer or financial planner. Nothing published is tailored to any subscriber’s situation, and nothing is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold a security.

Can I copy the BareNaked Portfolios trades in my own brokerage account?

You can, but the decision and the risk are yours alone. BareNaked Portfolios shows one real portfolio for information and education. Its position sizes and timing suit that account, not yours, and the published trades are not advice to follow them.

Does BareNaked Portfolios give tax advice about the trades it publishes?

No. BareNaked Portfolios is not a tax adviser, and the published trades take no account of anyone’s tax situation. Buying or selling the same securities can have different tax consequences for you, so ask a qualified tax professional before acting.

Does BareNaked Portfolios trade on what its subscribers do?

No. BareNaked Portfolios publishes each trade after the account has made it, and its trading policy forbids trading because of subscribers. After a published buy or sale, the account holds for at least two full trading days, except when a stop is reached or a trading halt forces a trade.

Subscribing

How does a subscriber hear about a trade?

Trades are published after they are made, from the broker’s own records, and a new position is then held for at least two trading days. A trade shows as “Filled · awaiting confirmation” until the broker confirms it. Subscribers can be notified in the app, by email, or both.

What notifications does a BareNaked Portfolios subscription send, and how?

BareNaked Portfolios sends four kinds: a trade in the portfolio, a stop that moved, an updated Leaders board, and a new Market Report. Each kind can arrive in the app, by email, both, or not at all.

How much does a BareNaked Portfolios subscription cost per month?

A BareNaked Portfolios subscription costs $14.95 per month, billed automatically each month until canceled, and includes everything that is published. Prices exclude any applicable taxes unless the checkout page states otherwise.

What does a BareNaked Portfolios subscription include beyond the trade log?

A BareNaked Portfolios subscription includes current positions with weights and gain or loss, every transaction from the broker, stop levels, the Leaders board ranked by BNP Score, and written market reports.

How do I cancel a BareNaked Portfolios subscription, and are refunds offered?

Cancel anytime from the Billing tab in Settings, or through the contact form. Canceling stops future charges, and access continues to the end of the paid period. Fees already paid are not refunded, though a billing error such as a duplicate charge may be.

The Guide explains each of these at length, and the disclosures are the full terms.
